Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced the launch of the Winter Yatra initiative on Thursday, aimed at supporting the livelihoods of people dependent on the Char Dham Yatra, which closes during the winter months.
Addressing a public rally, CM Dhami expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who joined the initiative and marked a significant moment in the state’s efforts to sustain tourism throughout the year.
“Char Dham Yatra is an essential pillar of Uttarakhand’s economy. Many people rely on it for employment—from hoteliers to taxi drivers and from local shopkeepers to trip organizers. When the portals of the four dhams close in winter, their businesses are severely impacted. To address this, we launched the historic Winter Yatra this year. I had urged Prime Minister Modi to participate in this Yatra, and we are honored that he has accepted,” Dhami said.
Prime Minister Modi, who arrived in Uttarakhand earlier today, engaged with local artists during a traditional folk dance performance in Mukhwa, the winter seat of Maa Ganga. He also flagged off a trek and bike rally in Harsil alongside Chief Minister Dhami.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the Prime Minister’s visit is crucial for placing Mukhwa on the global tourism map and further strengthening the state’s cultural and religious heritage.
“We are proud to witness this historic moment in Mukhwa. On behalf of all the people of Uttarakhand, I extend a hearty welcome and congratulations to Prime Minister Modi for his winter visit to the Devbhoomi,” Dhami added.
The Uttarakhand government launched a Winter Tourism program this year, which has already attracted thousands of devotees to the winter seats of Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. The initiative is designed to promote religious tourism, bolster the local economy, and support homestays and tourism businesses.
